St. Just's Plen an gwary is a lot more than the remains of a medieval open air theatre. Allege to be the oldest working theatre in Britain, this scheduled ancient monument has stood in the heart of the community for some 600 years.
Today's grasses plen can be freely used for events booked with St Just Town Council. It has also become inextricably linked with spectacular prouctions like the Ordinalia which, in order to take place at all, need the vital off-road access and storage and changing facilities until now provided by an adjacent plot and its hut.
But with the imminent sale of this property, the future of the plen as a working auditorium is now in jeopardy. To secure the plot on behalf of the community, and enable future audiences to celebrate a wealth of local, national and international culture in the plen, the St Just and District Trust and others have formed a group to rasi support and the the funds needed to buy it. Please send letters of support and / or donations to Bernard Rees, St Just and District Trust, Greystones, Carn Bosavern, St Just, Penzance, TR19 7QX
