I have been away from Cornwall for some thirty years but thanks to internet can keep up to date with my homeland. I am very excited about the way the Cornish language is progressing and want to learn it but am just bewildered by the various systems. Aren't the various language boards defeating their own ends by not coming out and saying which is to be the official version for the present day Cornish language. ...and please, can anyone tell me where to start?

Yes this is a difficult area. However there is only one Cornish Language Board and they recommend Kemmyn but do still hold exams in Unified. They do not hold exams in UCR or Modern/Late.
Modern/Late is run by the Cornish Language Council but it is only a small group and has neither the resources nor the wides spread use as the other forms.
UCR is recommended by Agan Tavas, however their dictionary is only english to cornish and there is only the New Testament and one novel available in this form. Kemmyn is widely available and for a beginner is the easier to learn from (although people might argue with this point) and I find learning from a distance that this is the easier form. The best place to go to start with is KDL (Kernewek dre lyther - cornish by letter) as you can download the first lesson free and have contact with a tutor via e.mail.
Chons da / Good Luck

Duegh why Lowena, I'm planning on putting together an e-mail correspondence course through UCR. I'm currently waiting for feedback from Agan Tavas as to how I'm going to proceed. I proposed such a course to Agan Tavas after KDL which provides a correspondence course for KK (via e-mail) and UC (by post), told me they weren't interested in offering their course in UCR (which I offered to transliterate). This course is not meant to be in direct competition with the KDL course, but I do wish to see a course using a modern medium such as e-mail provided to those who wish to learn Cornish in its UCR form. Yehes da dheugh why oll, Dan

Dan, if you want to publish, or publicise your course on this website (or better still http://www.kernowek.co.uk) or even this forum, just let me know. I'm really looking forward to seeing your course and perhaps doing it as well. Jonathan (www.cornishlanguage.co.uk / www.kernowek.co.uk Webmaster)

Thank you Jonathan and Dan. I think I'll start with Kemmyn to get an introduction and keep a lookout for your course, Dan, since it seems UCR is also popular. Maybe it wont be long before I can reply in Cornish! Once again, many thanks. Bailey.

I've still got some people from Agan Tavas going through them, but if you want to start on the first three lessons just send me an e-mail (address is undisclosed in the members' list) and I'll post them through. I'd be interested to hear what you think. I just haven't made the sound recordings I've planned to put in the package. Yehes da re'gas bo, Dan
